 1797
First written record Andre Pierre a visitor to the island witnessed an African dance called bomba.

1857
Juan Morel Campos was born. (1857-1965)
Composer that achieved national expression in his danzas.
Contributed to the emergence of recognizably Puerto Rican dance music ensemble in which clarinet and baritone form the leading instruments.
His music is still widely performed in Latin America.

1867
Music for the Puerto Rican National Anthem was composed by Feliz Astol and the lyrics by Lola Rodriguez

1873
Slavery was officially abolished

1892
Rafael Hernandez Marin was born. (1892-1965)
One of the most important composers of Puerto Rico.
Revered as Puerto Rico’s greatest and most prolific composers

1898
Puerto Rico was ceded by Spain to the United States following the Spanish-American war.

1923
Ernesto Antonio (Tito Puente) was born. (1923-2000)
Percussionist, bandleader and composer.
Popularized Cuban-based dance music and is known for his brilliance on the timbales and vibraphone.
Won 4 Grammys and recorded with almost every major jazz and Latin musician

1923
Luis Antonio Ramirez was born. (1923-1995)

1929
Raymond Barretto (Ray Barretto) was born. (1929-2006)
Band leader and conga player.
Recognized as major leader of salsa bands

1931
Ismael (Maelo) Rivera was born. (1931-1987)
Renowned composer and singer of salsa.
Earned the title of “El Sonero Major”.
He embodied a mix of the tradional folk Puerto Rican bomba and plena with the Cuban son vocal singing and style.
1946
Hector Lavoe (Hector Juan Perez Martinez) was born. (1946-1993)
Salsa Singer and composer known for his unique soneo vocal style and stage presence.

1950
Willie Colon (William Anthony Roman Jr.) was born. (1950-Present)
Known as “El Malo” (the bad boy of salsa)
His innovative sound has long combined Caribbean and Brazilian rhythms with elements of Jazz and rock.

1952
Became the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico

1965

1984
Luis Antonio Ramirez received a diploma of recognition by the institutee of Puerto Rican culture.
